Hello earthlings! Tis’ the season to watch Christmas specials and movies! We would like to share our top ten Christmas movies and specials.
1. A Christmas Story
“He looks a deranged, Easter bunny!” ~The Old Man. A wonderful, warm, fuzzy, funny Christmas movie! A Christmas Story explores the trials and wonders of boyhood. (Not that we would know anything about that.) All Ralphie wants for Christmas is a 22 caliber, Red Ryder BB gun, but his mom thinks he’ll shoot his eye out. He does everything he can think to drop subtle (at least in a boy’s mind) hints to his parents and teacher. Does he get his BB gun? Ha! We’re not going to tell you! You’ll just have to watch the movie to find out!
“Does someone need a hug?” ~Buddy the Elf. Elf is probably the most hilarious Christmas movie you will ever watch! It is about an elf, who discovers that he is really a man, and goes to search for his biological father in NYC. Once he is in New York he not only meets his father, but also his stepmother, his brother, a girl named Jovie, and a raccoon that needs a hug. He also eats cotton balls, pasta with syrup, and the World’s Best Cup of Coffee. While in New York he works for Gimbel’s, break dances in a mailroom, falls in love, goes to jail, and saves Christmas! (Talk about a busy holiday schedule!)
3. It’s a Wonderful Life
“Every time a bell rings an angel gets it’s wings!” ~ZuZu. It’s a Wonderful Life is a touching movie with classic charm. It has been a holiday favorite among families since it was released almost 70 years ago. George Bailey feels like a failure in life, and wishes that he had never been born. His guardian angel, Clarence, shows up and grants him his wish. After seeing what life would be like for others if he had never been born, he realizes that no man is a failure who has friends.
Everyone should watch this movie on Thanksgiving!
4. Polar Express
“At one time most of my friends could hear the bell, but as years passed it fell silent for all of them. Even Sarah found one Christmas that she could no longer hear its sweet sound. Though I’ve grown old the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe.” ~Hero Boy. Grab a cup of hot cocoa and curl up to watch this magical movie! A little boy is beginning to lose his faith in Santa Claus (Oh, no!!!!!) until a mystical train appears on his street on Christmas Eve. He goes on the ride of his life, and learns that Santa is indeed real.
5. The Santa Clause Series
“Well, isn’t that a pretty picture, Santa rolling down the block in a PANZER! Well kids, I… I certainly hope you have been good this year, cause it looks like Santa just took out the Pearson home. Incoming!” ~ Scott Calvin. The Santa Clause series is a favorite in our family! We generally watch at least one each year. Scott Calvin is a successful business man, who doesn’t have very much Christmas spirit and who can’t cook turkey. That is until the real Santa Claus falls off his roof! Scott Calvin unsuspectingly puts on the Santa suit and quickly discovers that he just officially became Santa Claus. This series is humorous and entertaining.
6. Shop Around the Corner
“Well I really wouldn’t care to scratch your surface, Mr. Kralik, because I know exactly what I’d find. Instead of a heart, a hand-bag. Instead of a soul, a suitcase. And instead of an intellect, a cigarette lighter… which doesn’t work.” ~Klara Novak. In case you haven’t caught it yet, I really like old Jimmy Stewart movies. Alfred and Klara have been writing love letters to each other not knowing realizing they are co-workers! Unfortunately, they can’t stand each other in real life! Will the ever discover their love for one another? Or will they continue to hate each other when they find out the truth? Find out in this delightful Christmas romance!
7. The Nativity
“There is a will for this child greater than my fear of what they may do.” ~Mary. A well done depiction of the Christmas story, this movie follows Mary and Joseph on their journey to Bethlehem. This movie is fantastic! It tells the story of Jesus’s birth accurately, and does not change it at all, outside of adding some minor details.
8. The Classics (Rudolph, The Little Drummer Boy, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, etc.)
It wouldn’t be Christmas without them!
9. Holiday Inn
“It’s going to be easy – like peeling a turtle.” ~Ted Hanover. I would have ranked this movie higher, but I’m not quite sure it counts as a Christmas movie, since it includes other holidays as well. Anyway, it’s a great movie, with lots of classic dances and songs!
10. A Charlie Brown Christmas Special
“I never thought it was such a bad little tree. It’s not bad at all, really. Maybe it just needs a little love.” ~Linus. I really don’t actually like Charlie Brown specials (before I get any angry comments, I do like the comic strips), but I have to give the Christmas special some credit, simply because it shares the gospel with thousands of people on national television each year. If your looking for a sweet, simple Christmas special this is it!
We hope you all have a splendid Christmas! ~Savy and Ally
